While some door-to-door sales are legitimate, it is becoming an increasingly popular practice used to cheat unsuspecting people into getting caught up in expensive long-term contracts. A CBC poll from 2013 found that over 66% of Canadians found door-to-door salespeople overly aggressive even when homeowners clearly stated they were not interested in what was being sold. There are many door-to-door sales agents promising great savings on furnaces. These savings may seem too good to be true – and they are. Don’t be fooled. Just this month, a single mother in Saskatoon was coerced into signing a furnace contract that would have had her spending over $10,000 over the course of 10 years, a number much higher than she was initially told.
