These days, most household appliances don’t need to be “installed” – they just need to be plugged in. However, with central air conditioning most people don’t realize that there is a lot more to it than just plugging it in.
Your air conditioning system is a major purchase that involves two key elements – the product itself and the installation.
You and your neighbor could purchase the exact same air conditioning system but the installation will be what makes all the difference when it comes to the efficiency, performance, and longevity of the system.
Unlike most of your appliances, an air conditioning system will perform effectively or ineffectively based on how it is installed; the company who installs the system designs it specifically for your home. They control the process, not the manufacturer.
Imagine that you have purchased a 2 ton 15 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or the ratio of cooling capacity to power input) air conditioning unit. If it’s installed incorrectly it could be performing below its rated capacity, perhaps at 13 SEER, which means your air conditioning unit is operating less efficiently than it is meant to.
Purchasing a 13 SEER unit is much less money than a 15 SEER unit. So having a 15 SEER operate as efficiently as a 13 SEER means you aren’t taking advantage of your full investment.
To take full advantage of your investment, no matter the size or efficiency, the proper parts need to be assembled and incorporated into the design in order for the air conditioner to run at its designed efficiency.
How the installation is performed is also important. A neat and tidy installation shows that the technician cares about his work and is well trained for the job. It also reflects positively on the installation company when employees show pride in their work.
Once the installation is complete the unit must be pressure tested to make sure there are no leaks whatsoever. Then the system must be pumped down to at least the manufacturer’s recommended levels to ensure all moisture is out of the system. If any residual moisture mix with refrigerant it will create an acidic combination which will eat away at the inside of the air conditioner and could result in premature failure of the compressor (it’s the equivalent of the engine your car).
Though most brands carry a 10-year warranty for a compressor, they do not cover the $1000 or more in labour that is needed to replace the compressor and/or the refrigerant.
And the refrigerate charge is just as critical as the compressor. Too little and it will not remove enough heat. Too much in the excess system pressure will cause the unit to work too hard causing premature failure.
At the end of the day, a properly designed and installed air conditioning system will give you many years of trouble-free operation.
That is why, when shopping for an air conditioner, the price shouldn’t be the deciding factor. If you decide to go with the cheapest price remember – in the end you get what you paid for.
Your air conditioner is a valuable asset on hot summer days and nights. It makes your home very comfortable place to be. Don’t put you and your family’s comfort at risk! Choose a reputable air conditioning installation company – one you can trust.
