Hydronics is a form of radiant heating in which water is used as the heat-transfer medium for both heating and cooling a house or commerical building. In fact, some of the oldest and most common examples of heating systems are hot-water radiators and steam.
Hydronic systems typically use either elecricity or gas to heat the water, and can be either radiator based, or in-floor.
Most hydronic systems have three main components:
- a boiler to heat the water
- in-floor piping, or baseboards/radiators which in most rooms are installed against an outside wall
- a pump to circulate water from the boiler through the pipes to the radiator and back again
